DAIN in NYC

I've been capturing streetart via Instagram for a while now and am thankful that NYC and the surrounding neighborhoods are always in constant supply. One artist whose work I'm always on the lookout for is DAIN. I love DAIN's use of collage, bright colors and pop culture to produce striking images that I'm always excited to find.

Art Theory with a Side of Mustard

This past weekend I was in the Chelsea neighborhood of NYC to check out the Yayoi Kusama exhibit when I stumbled on this lonely hot dog cart. My first thought was "Yay, food!" because if you're familiar with this area you know there isn't a whole lot to nosh on while you take in the exhibits.

When I looked closer I realized this was not your typical dirty water hot-dog situation at all, but it's own exhibit/project. You can read more about Alexis Dahan's project entitled "We Serve Selected Texts" here and on his website. I sadly didn't stop to really investigate but it looks like the project will be around on Saturday's for a bit longer and I plan to check it out. Be sure to check for the next location and to see more of this cool idea.

Light Bright

I have always loved light and lighting. From Lite Brite to black light to neon signage, light is everywhere from toys to sculpture and beyond. Looking at how you light your living room or how you light a skyscaper is fascinating to me and I keep an eye out for unique ways light changes our environment.

In anticipation of the upcoming James Turrell exhibit opening at The Guggenheim on June 21st I've curated a few of my own Instagram images taken over the last year that capture the beauty of light in unexpected ways.

Art as Fashion Muse

Two of my favorites things: art + fashion. One of my ongoing projects consists of my comparisons and observations on art influencing fashion and vice versa. I love to find the connection. Can you see it?

Loved opening my Juxtapoz email today to find this image staring back at me .

Ron Mueck is a sculptor of hyper-realistic, large-scale pieces that are absolutely amazing.  I had the pleasure of seeing his solo exhibit in 2006 at The Brooklyn Museum. The pieces were truly cool and rendered with such detail, and I was happy I had the chance to "experience" them in-person so I could take in their scale. Nothing like a 30ft baby or giant woman in bed... dreamlike in a way that makes you feel like you're crashing a fairytale starring giants.

He has a new show about to open in Paris that looks to debut some new work along side older pieces. if you're in Paris, check it out and be sure to let me know how it is! For more, check out Juxtapoz.

Big Snow

Here in NYC we're due for a big snow storm that may or may not be named Nemo. Who names these storms? Anyway, we really haven't had a good, old-fashioned Nor'Easter in the city for a few years and I'm excited to pop outside and take pics or stay inside in my jammies all day. If you're in the Northeast this weekend be safe. x

ArtWork: Laurette in a Green Robe, Black Background

I recently headed up to The Metropolitan Museum of Art to see the Matisse: In Search of True Painting exhibit which focuses on his use of color in his paintings. I absolutely loved the show. I have always loved the color in Matisse's work, especially the oranges. And I rediscovered so much more about Matisse last year in Paris. But this show highlighted some unusual color palette's like the one in my favorite work in the show, Laurette in a Green Robe, Black Background.
